Summer Institutes Central Team


Jennifer Frederick, Ph.D. is Executive Director of the Yale Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. Jenny is the PI on the HHMI and Helmsley awards, and she is involved in initiatives across campus to advance STEM education. In that role, she oversees the program and develops strategies to ensure that our national efforts also benefit our campus community. She brings to SI notable interdisciplinary teaching experience and a commitment to inclusive teaching practices in higher education.


Jonathan Waterhouse is the Project Manager of Evaluation and Technology for the HHMI Summer Institutes program, based at the Yale Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. In this position, Jonathan develops and maintains essential data infrastructure through web programming and database management. He specializes in creating innovative techniques for organizing and presenting data.

Glen Davenport

Glen Davenport brings a background in STEM education and training in research methodology to the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning as a program evaluator.  Following the completed evaluation of the Helmsley Postdoctoral Teaching Scholars program, he is now the evaluator for the Summer Institutes on Scientific Teaching program.  He is currently investigating how local conditions prevent or enable efforts to make positive reforms in academic departments.


Gabriella Kirkley is the Assistant Program Director for the STEM Education team at the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning at Yale University. Her team helps to coordinate, organize, generate interest in, and gain support for, the Summer Institutes initiatives advanced through regional, mobile, online and one-day workshops. The mission of the Summer Institutes is to promote evidence-based teaching across scientific fields, especially through supporting best practices for increased diversity, assessment, and active learning.


Mamta Agarwal is the Senior Administrative Assistant for the STEM Education team at the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning at Yale University. Mamta earned a Master’s in Nonprofit Management at New School University in New York and a Master’s in Social Work at Nirmala Niketan Institute in Mumbai. She brings her expertise as a former project manager of a national telephone helpline and works with Gabriella to coordinate and organize the Summer Institutes initiatives.

Leo Chen

Leo Chen is a junior at Yale majoring in Statistics and Data Science. He supports Glen and Jonathan in evaluating data, managing the Summer Institutes' websites, and upgrading the STEM education team's data presentation software.
