Summary of Job Duties:
The new Learning Assistant Program Coordinator (LAPC) will have four main roles: 1) further develop a peer mentoring program that supports the implementation and study of active learning by faculty members across scientific disciplines in order to increase success and retention of all students, 2) teach undergraduate and graduate courses on how people learn, increasing cohesion between synergistic efforts on campus, 3) supervise, advise, and evaluate STEM secondary education students during teaching internships, 4) assist with running week-long faculty training workshops, specifically the Mobile Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching (either virtual or in person), and 5) engaging in the campus community.
At a campus with a highly diverse student body, UA Little Rock is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from a diverse background and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students from marginalized groups.

Required Education and/or Experience:
Master’s degree in STEM field with experience in pedagogy training OR master’s degree in education with a strong background in one or more STEM fields. Experience with scientific teaching (the science of how people learn); specifically undergraduate peer learning assistants, supplemental instruction, and/or graduate teaching assistant training.
Preferred Education and/or Experience:
Experience leading (1) Learning Assistant (or similar peer mentoring) programs, (2) professional development of faculty and future faculty implementing evidence-based teaching practices. (3) Masters or doctorate in discipline-based education research. (4) Evidence of a strong teaching record in 7-12 or higher education.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is focused on increasing equity in higher education through the training of teachers and future teachers on how to implement evidence-based teaching practices. To do this, the successful candidate will work in four main areas:
Improve student success in bottleneck courses, the LAPC will run the Learning Assistants (LA) Program at UA Little Rock, scaling up to include departments across the campus. This coordinator will recruit, train, supervise and manage LAs while applying for externally funded research opportunities in the nexus between student success and retention as it relates to diversity, inclusion and equity. Development of standard protocols for and rigorous assessment of the LA Program by the LAPC will maximize the quality of the program. The LAPC will also recruit faculty members and help them implement active learning in their classes with the aid of LAs. The LAPC will develop a way to officially recognize the efforts of LAs, through an official certificate or badging system recognized on their transcripts.
Train the next generation of teachers is imperative in our long-term strategy of reaching equity for our students. To this end, the LAPC will teach a semester-long course for graduate students and secondary education students that focuses on the science of how people learn in an active and interactive environment. By the end of the course, students will be able to create their own curriculum to implement active learning in their classrooms. Either in addition to this class, or as a shorter part of the term, the coordinator will instruct LAs and tutors in a course that focuses more on theory than development of their own curriculum. This course will build cohesion between all of our campus student success initiatives, including the Office of Student Retention Initiatives and tutoring centers (e.g., the Math Assistance Center, the DCSTEM Student Services Center, and TRIO Student Support Services).
Help streamline and improve advising of students in STEM secondary education programs (education minor) in conjunction with faculty in the School of Education. This may include placing, supervising and evaluating students during student-teaching internships and field experiences.
Coordinate with the UALR Director of the Mobile Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching (MoSI) and help recruit faculty, plan and run the Institute. At least once a year, this workshop will be offered to faculty to engage their knowledge about the evidence on how people learn and how to implement active learning in their classroom to increase success and retention of underserved students.
Participate in other informal events on campus such as seminars related to teaching, active learning, retention, or science education as a part of ATLE or colleges or departments.

The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to the success of all students, especially those from marginalized groups.
To this end, the LAPC must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal), an awareness of the literature on how people learn, and experience training others in evidence-based teaching approaches.
