FIUteach is a secondary teacher preparation initiative that is helping to produce highly effective mathematics and science teachers. Core elements of the program include recruitment and retention incentives, a compact degree program, a strong focus on research-based strategies for teaching and learning mathematics and science, early field teaching experience, and personal guidance from Master Teachers and faculty. Each year FIUteach offers free, immersive teaching experiences to students in the program, that lead to undergraduate science and mathematics degrees plus endorsement for secondary teaching certification.

The FIUteach program started in 2014 as a high-fidelity UTeach replication model and it has developed into one of the largest and most dynamic UTeach programs in the nation. UTeach is a nationally recognized model of secondary STEM teacher preparation, founded at the University of Texas Austin and supported by the National Mathematics and Science and Initiative (NMSI) and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). FIUteach serves as a foundation of a $1.2M NSF Noyce project that prepares students to work in the highest need schools. As the program matures, further opportunities for change and professional teacher development are created.

The Associate Director (AD) will be involved in leading all daily aspects of FIUteach, including collaborating closely with the program directors, undergraduate students, Master Teachers and K-12 administrators and teachers. The Associate Director will have the opportunity to coordinate with stakeholders across the institution as well as K12 partners in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The Associate Director will report to the program co-directors.


  • Program leadership, including coordination of all aspects of the program, working with co-directors and program faculty, and oversight of program assessment, website and recruitment materials.

  • Coordination of FIUteach team including six Master Teachers, disciplinary faculty, student assistants, K12 partner schools and mentor teachers.

  • Facilitate strategic opportunities that promote FIUteach, including collaborations, research, and grants with key stakeholders.

  • Program development and implementation, including leading development of lower division courses and curricula, recruiting students to program; interaction with school systems; interaction with campus committees and constituencies.

  • Teaching and mentoring FIUteach students

Position requires some travel, primarily in South Florida to recruit and work with principals, teachers and students in the schools, attendance at meetings with secondary school teachers, and supervisors, etc. Position also requires one or more out-of-state trips/year to attend UTeach and other related meetings.


  • Applicants must have a strong background in science, mathematics or science/mathematics education.

  • Candidates must have at least a master's degree although applicants with a doctorate degree are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • At least three years experience with in-service and pre-service teacher preparation, K12 community development, mentoring and leadership roles.

  • Very strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Additionally, preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:

  • Significant experience in teaching at the K12 level;

  • Knowledge of recent advances in science and mathematics teaching;

  • Experience in equity, access, social justice and/or urban education;

  • Teaching, advising, and /or administration in higher education;

  • Experience working both collaboratively and independently;

  • Grant writing and management experience; and

  • Experience conducting and leading a research program.
