The Department of Biology at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a visiting full-time faculty appointment in Genetics for the 2019-2020 academic year to begin in August 2019. We seek candidates who are able to teach an intermediate-level Genetics course with an accompanying lab, as well as a course that covers equivalent material without a lab (Genetic Analysis). Depending on the needs of the department, the candidate will also teach two sections of either to a team-taught introductory course for prospective majors (Intro to Cellular and Molecular Biology) or a topics course for non-science majors in an area chosen by the candidate (Biological Principles).
Visiting full-time faculty teach three courses each semester, with a lab section counted as a full course, and are eligible for travel support and reimbursement of relocation costs within the College’s published policies. All full-time appointments offer competitive salaries and include full benefits.
The Genetics and Genetic Analysis courses are intermediate-level electives taken mostly by 2nd, 3rd and 4th year Biology majors, as well as students in our interdisciplinary biochemistry and neuroscience concentrations. They cover fundamental topics in molecular, classical and population genetics. The Intro to Cellular and Molecular Biology course is the department’s first introductory course for prospective majors and is also taken by students with an interest in health-related careers. This course covers biochemistry, cell biology and molecular genetics. It is team-taught in which individual instructors teach their own sections of lecture, but collaborate to develop common lectures, assessments, and other materials. The goal of the department’s Biological Principles courses for non-science majors is to introduce key aspects of scientific thinking to a broad audience by using a specific topic chosen by each instructor. Examples of recent topics include: Human Genetics, Genetic and Epigenetic Inheritance, Cancer Biology, the HIV Pandemic, and the Biology of Aging.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to, and excellence in, undergraduate teaching as informed by current practice and scholarship in the field. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have completed a Ph.D.
