The College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at Auburn University invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month position at the level of Assistant Professor, with research interests in the area of physics education research (PER). The home department of the successful candidate will be COSAM’s Department of Physics. COSAM has recently hired discipline-based education research (DBER) faculty in the Departments of Geosciences, Chemistry, and Biology and is eager to grow this developing DBER group within the college.

The successful candidate is expected to establish an extramurally funded PER program and collaborate with a growing cohort of researchers within the department and college on studying/transforming STEM higher education through basic and applied research methods and their assessment. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, innovation of evidence-based, active-learning course development/delivery, efficacy of student-led teaching methods in the learning process within the physics classroom/lab, and research on human-technology interfaces/tools to improve learning in physics. Duties also will include teaching in the physics department at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervising graduate research.

The physics department at Auburn University consists of 25 faculty, approximately 50 graduate students and 50 undergraduate physics majors. Research is in the areas of atomic molecular and optical physics, condensed matter physics, plasma physics, space physics, and biophysics. About 2,000 students each semester are taught in introductory physics. The department cares deeply about teaching and learning and uses evidence-based research to drive improvements in classroom best practices. The physics department is very supportive of education research as a discipline and welcomes this new addition to their faculty.
